Summary of Position
The Associate Dean of Research, Scholarship, and Innovation (ADRSI) serves as the chief research officer at the School of Nursing and provides leadership in strategic planning for research and scholarly activities. The ADRSI oversees and maintains effective school-wide systems of support for the research and scholarly work of faculty. A major role of the ADRSI includes collaborating with the Department Chairpersons to facilitate the development of rigorous and innovative programs of faculty research and scholarship. The ADRSI serves as the formal point of contact for matters related to research and scholarly activities for the School with the University, the VCU Health System, and external organizations. The ADRSI is accountable to the Dean.
Appointment
The ADRSI is appointed by the Dean, based on a competitive application process.
Functions and Responsibilities
1. Represents the School of Nursing within the university (including the VCU Research Development Advisory Council and the VCU Office of Sponsored Programs), health system, and with external constituents related to research and scholarship programs and as assigned by the Dean.
2. Provides leadership in strategic planning for achievement of the research/scholarly mission of the School consistent with the mission and strategic plan of the University.
3. Oversees school-wide systems, fiscal, physical, and human, that support faculty members in development of programs of research and scholarship (including pre-award, post-award, statistical support, data management, and the state of the art Biobehavioral Research Laboratory).
4. Manages the Office of Research, Scholarship, and Innovation, including development and supervision of personnel.
5. Collaborates with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs to ensure that the doctoral program prepares the future generation of nurse scientists for successful careers in research and as stewards of the discipline.
6. Collaborates with the Associated Dean for Practice and Community Engagement to support best practices in community engaged research.
7. Collaborates with Department Chairs to mentor individual faculty members in development and implementation of their programs of research/scholarship and also develop mentorship skills among experienced research faculty.
8. Implements faculty development programs related to emerging science in the School’s research foci and that support faculty at various stages of their research/scholarly careers.
9. Manages development and submission of voluntary and mandatory reports on the research projects and activities of the School and its faculty for all internal and external reporting bodies.
10. Identifies opportunities for SON faculty participation in activities related to research/scholarship at local, regional, national, and international arenas.
11. Serves as a co-chair of the Research Evidence-Based Practice and Leadership Council at VCU Health System. In this role the ADRSI facilitates collaborative support systems for clinician and faculty scientists to develop and implement programs of research within the VCU Health System.
12. Convenes the SON Research Council, which is a monthly meeting of SON scholars designed to provide timely updates on research operations, important research-related educational offerings, and a forum for discussing research issues.
Qualifications
• Earned doctorate in nursing or related discipline. If PhD is in a related field, a master’s degree in nursing is highly preferred.
• Experience conducting research in the nursing discipline, with preference for experience in an academic health science setting.
• Full-time senior faculty rank (Associate Professor or Professor), tenured.
• Expertise in research methods and grant management.
• Administrative experience at a senior level.
• Significant record of scholarly achievement and history of extramural funding
• Experience on NIH study section is preferred.
