The University of South Carolina Upstate, located in Spartanburg, South Carolina, seeks a transformative, collaborative, visionary, strategic, and academically accomplished leader to serve as its next Dean of the Mary Black School of Nursing. This is an outstanding opportunity for an experienced and accomplished leader with significant potential to influence and shape the future of nursing education in the Upstate and throughout the state of South Carolina.
Set in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the University of South Carolina Upstate is a comprehensive public institution serving more than 6,000 students across four colleges and schools. The University main campus is in Spartanburg, with classes also taught at the University Center in Greenville.
USC Upstate is known for its excellent academic programs and student-centered practices and environment. U.S. News & World Report recently ranked USC Upstate the No. 2 Top Public University in the South and the No. 4 Best College in the South for Veterans. Additionally, the University has been designated a College of Distinction.
Since its founding in 1967, USC Upstate has made the nursing program a central part of its mission. The Mary Black School of Nursing is essential to its mission as a regional comprehensive university dedicated to providing rigorous, career-relevant, and accessible education and enhancing the quality of life in Upstate South Carolina.
The Mary Black School of Nursing is one of the Southeast’s highly regarded nursing institutions offering a four-year degree. The School aims to produce graduates who are the hires of choice based on the ongoing relationship with academic medical centers and School of Nursing leadership.
The School of Nursing consists of 37 full-time and 38 part-time faculty members, with 12 holding doctoral degrees in nursing, including PhD, EdD, and DNP. Faculty members are passionate about improving health globally through educating the next generation of nurses.
Home to nearly 600 undergraduate and graduate students, the School offers the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree, RN-BSN degree (online and face-to-face formats), and an online Master of Science degree in Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) preparation. All programs in the Mary Black School of Nursing are CCNE-accredited. The year-to-date first-time NCLEX pass rate is above the national average, and CNL graduates have a 100% pass rate on the certification exam. USC Upstate has the largest RN-BSN program in the state.
On-campus students enroll at both Greenville and Spartanburg campus locations. Clinicals are completed in hospitals, clinics, migrant camps, prisons, community-based and community-oriented facilities, and physician offices to enable students to gain medical, surgical, pediatric, psychiatric, public health, and emergency room experiences. Students also have a range of high-impact educational opportunities, including experiential learning in the state-of-the-art nursing simulation lab and service learning in community health programs.
Well-established study abroad programs in South Africa and Central America expose students to international clinical practices in low-resource settings. The School recently partnered with Bermuda College to provide the first RN-BSN opportunities for nurses on the island of Bermuda. Based on these experiences, Mary Black School of Nursing alumni work in 35 countries worldwide.
The School also partnered with North Greenville University to offer a 5-year, dual-degree program in Biology from North Greenville and BSN from USC Upstate. The first two students will matriculate at USC Upstate in January 2019.
The Mary Black School of Nursing offers collaborative experiences with the Via College of Osteopathic Medicine and Presbyterian College of Pharmacy for interprofessional learning experiences.
The Dean will report to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. A transformational leader and inspiring educator, the Dean will have the ability to guide the continued success and growth of the School with a vision and strategy for addressing and responding to the rapidly changing and evolving healthcare landscape. As the chief administrative officer for the School, the Dean will be responsible for developing, communicating, operationalizing, and achieving goals that align with USC Upstate’s strategic vision and academic mission.
The Dean will share USC Upstate’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, and community engagement. This administrator will have a proven record of building community partnerships with academic medical centers, nursing residency programs, and other external stakeholders.
• Uphold and promote excellence within the School of Nursing’s academic programs, maintaining accreditation in compliance with the standards of CCNE Accreditation, regulations of the State of South Carolina, and the overall University’s assessment measures.
• Foster and guide strategic scholarly activity and externally funded research and programmatic initiatives.
• Expand and develop academic programs in response to innovations in nursing science, nursing education, and the healthcare industry.
• Ensure efficient and effective administration of the School of Nursing’s personnel, space, funding, resources, and technology.
• Ensure efficient and effective mentoring of faculty, students, and staff.
• Contribute to University Advancement and the growth of relationships and partnerships throughout the Upstate region.
• Foster a strong sense of community, shared purpose, and inclusivity within our richly diverse University community.
Candidates must possess a doctoral degree in nursing or related field, with a minimum of an MSN degree if the doctoral degree is in a related field.
Qualified candidates will be academically accomplished with a progressive research agenda demonstrating growth and complexity in scholarship, publications, and grant-funding. The selected candidate will have scholarly accomplishments and academic experience that warrant a tenured appointment at USC Upstate. The Dean will be a person of the highest integrity.

• Unencumbered license as a registered nurse in South Carolina or any compact state
The University of South Carolina Upstate was founded in 1967 to avert a serious healthcare labor shortage crisis when Spartanburg General Hospital announced plans to eliminate its diploma program for registered nurses. The Spartanburg Regional Campus of the University of South Carolina system, as it was first known, opened its doors in the fall of 1967 to 177 students on the first floor of the Spartanburg General Hospital nursing residence.
USC Upstate has grown from a small, two-year campus into one of the leading metropolitan universities in the Southeast.
One of the most beautiful and high-tech campuses in the state, the institution is among the fastest growing universities in South Carolina. Academic programs have expanded well beyond nursing to include 40 bachelor’s and master’s programs in the liberal arts, sciences, business, information systems, teacher education, and nursing. The University has five colleges and schools: College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences; College of Science and Technology; Mary Black School of Nursing; George Dean Johnson, Jr. College of Business and Economics; and School of Education, Human Performance, and Health.
The University offers challenging academic courses, small class sizes, personal experiences, remarkable diversity, an NCAA Division I athletic program, an expansive international community, and a dynamic campus life. The faculty has 235 full-time members and 220 part-time. The University has a 15:1 student/faculty ratio and an average class size of 25.
USC Upstate has approximately 6,000 students and 30,000 alumni from across the world. With 26 states and 17 countries represented among the student body, the University reflects the international character of the Upstate region, which has the highest per capita concentration of international businesses in the U.S.
USC Upstate serves the cities of Spartanburg and Greenville and their surrounding communities. Along with the enormous growth on the Spartanburg campus, USC Upstate has developed a significant presence in Greenville at the University Center Greenville (UCG). UCG is a nonprofit consortium of seven higher education institutions dedicated to increasing access to educational opportunities for the citizens of the Greater Greenville Metropolitan Area of South Carolina.
Competing in NCAA Division I and the Big South Conference, USC Upstate sponsors eight men’s and nine women’s teams known as the Spartans.
Spartanburg, South Carolina
The City of Spartanburg is the seat of Spartanburg County. The city has a population of nearly 40,000 with the metropolitan area reaching more than 301,000 residents.
A major center for higher education, Spartanburg has seven colleges and universities that have a collective enrollment of approximately 15,000 students. The institutions are a major economic driver for the city and larger region, and a number of partnerships between the schools and businesses create significant strategic advantages in workforce training, research, and economic development.
Known for its natural beauty, Spartanburg offers a high quality of life and friendly people. Shopping, dining, activities, historical sites, and cultural arts are available. The Chapman Cultural Center, located next door to USC Upstate’s downtown Spartanburg business college, and the Hub City Writers Project host a rich variety of community events and programs year-round.
The city is home to a diverse array of international companies. The Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System is the largest employer in the city and the fourth largest employer in the Upstate region. Other major employers include the Greenville Health System, Greenville County Schools, and BMW Manufacturing Corp.
The mild climate, with four distinct seasons, allows for outdoor activities year-round. The area has lakes, rivers, parks, preserves, arboretums, and trails.
Situated at the junction of I-85 and I-26, Spartanburg is easily accessible to both the mountains and the beaches. The city is 75 miles from Charlotte, N.C., 93 miles to Columbia, S.C., and approximately three hours from Atlanta, Ga.; Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and Charleston, S.C.
