Each year, Minority Nurse offers scholarships to three outstanding individuals pursuing a career in nursing. We received an overwhelming number of applications this year and selecting our winners was no easy task! Several of our applicants had an impressive academic background as well as a dedication to community service, and we commend each of you for your compassion and stellar work ethic. Unfortunately, we could only select three winners so an outstanding GPA alone was not enough. We took into account your personal struggles as well as your devotion to your families and your communities. After much deliberation, we have chosen our 2013 winners. And the first runner-up is…

Corinna Hughes!

Corinna is a student at the University of Kentucky and is passionate about women’s health. Not only has she overcome great adversity as a bi-racial student in the south, but she also maintains a 3.8 GPA while actively volunteering with the Agape House, God’s Pantry, and Planned Parenthood.  And she is the vice president of the Phi Sigma Theta Honor Society and the treasurer of Voices for Planned Parenthood (VOX). With her professor describing her as “unquestionably the most amazing young woman I have ever met,” “a role model to all that she comes in contact with,” “the reason I love teaching,” and “one student I really hope will become a nurse; and even more specific, my women’s health nurse practitioner,” Corinna was an obvious choice.  Congratulations, Corinna!

Each week we will be announce another winner on our blog. Stay tuned!
