The Department of Nursing and Health Sciences is in the College of Science. The department has over 530 students in accredited BSN program and over 1000 students enrolled in the HSC Program at the Hayward and Concord campus. Nursing program graduates have a history of strong performance on the NCLEX, and the nursing curriculum has recently been updated. Over 530 students are enrolled in the Health Sciences Program which has four options: Administration, Pre-professional Preparation, Education, and Environmental Health. The Department has a reputation for producing highly skilled health professionals and enjoys supportive relationships with the region’s healthcare facilities. In the Nursing program, all clinical lab courses are taught in local hospitals, clinics and public agencies. The Nursing Skills Lab and Simulation Lab experience provide students the opportunity to practice and learn psychomotor skills using mannequins and fellow students as “patients”. The Skills Lab Coordinator assists faculty with demonstrations of these skills. The Coordinator also orders and maintains inventory required for instruction.
Assists faculty with evaluation and demonstrations of professional nursing skills; works with faculty to develop skilled protocols as new equipment becomes available; assists faculty with Simulation Lab activities; maintains equipment in working order and finding independent repair persons if needed; reviews equipment and media catalogs to recommend new purchases; orders lab supplies in an efficient and timely manner; monitor use and stock of supplies; develops schedules with faculty for use of skills lab on quarter-to-quarter and week-to-week bases; maintains records of lab sections and student activities; collects and provides for review of media post-test.
Equivalent to 3 years of related experience. Two years of college with 16 related semester units may be substituted for 2 years of the required experience. Knowledge of principles, information methods and techniques related to professional nursing skills; knowledge of supplies and equipment needed to perform professional nursing skills; must maintain currency of knowledge able to plan, organize and coordinate schedule of nursing student’s use of skills lab; problem-solving skills. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with diverse student, faculty, staff and community is essential; flexibility in scheduling quarter-to-quarter and week-to-week; ability to communicate well in written and spoken English.
Must have a current California Registered Nurse License.
PREFERRED SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE:
Ability to work with many interruptions; ability to work in a noisy setting.
