THE POSITION: The National Institute on Nursing Research (NINR) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is seeking exceptional candidates for the position of Scientific Director for its Division of Intramural Research (DIR). The DIR is organized into 3 scientific programs including 3 laboratories and branches conducting laboratory, clinical, and population-based research. The Intramural Division has a staff of approximately 30 employees with an annual budget of approximately $7.8 million. The Scientific Director is a vital part of the senior leadership team and serves as the principal advisor to the NINR Director on biomedical and scientific affairs involving the Intramural Research Program related to the care of individuals across the life span – from management of patients during illness and recovery to the reduction of risks for disease and disability, the promotion of healthy lifestyles, and promoting quality of life and care for individuals at the end of life. The incumbent will lead their own vibrant research group as well as oversee the clinical, translational and basic research of the institute. NINR seeks to extend the nursing science by integrating the biological and behavioral sciences, employing new technologies to research questions, improving research methods, and developing the scientists of the future.
This position offers a unique and exciting opportunity for an extremely capable individual to develop and implement an overall vision for the NINR DIR and to plan and oversee basic fundamental, clinical and applied research programs. The Scientific Director will evaluate research efforts and establish program priorities, allocate resources, direct training of pre-doctoral and post-doctoral fellows, collaborate with other NIH programs, advise the NINR Director and senior staff on DIR programs and on areas of scientific interest to the Institute, and lead her/his own research group. The incumbent plays a key role in creating and maintaining a nurturing research environment that encourages creativity, collaboration among scientists from different disciplines, effective training of post-doctoral fellows, and efficient utilization of resources. Resources commensurate with the proposed program will be provided, including resources for an independent research program.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants should have a PhD in nursing or a science relevant to nursing, and experience that reflects an understanding of academic nursing. Applicants should have demonstrated scientific leadership and/or senior-level research experience, and possess a strong basic research background. Applicants should have a program of research with national and/or international standing in an area relevant to NINR’s research portfolio. Applicants should also have some understanding of clinical issues. The successful candidate will have a compelling vision for the future of the field, proven experience in managing and directing a scientific research program, and well-honed administrative and interpersonal skills. SALARY/BENEFITS: Salary is competitive and will be commensurate with the experience of the candidate.
