Last week we reviewed reasons a nurse wouldn’t feel confident starting their own business. This week we will be continuing this theme, but with a focus on what you can do to hone in on a potential business.

You Want to Start Your Own Business, but Just Don’t Know What to Do

What do you see yourself doing? Some business ideas come from wanting to make a difference, some spur from hobbies, and others come from pure coincidence.

Think about your passions in life. What are they and how can you incorporate nursing into your plan? Nursing is a very versatile field and nurses can use their skills in seemingly unimaginable ways.

Just about anything you have a passion or interest in can be transformed into a nursing business. Think long and hard about what drives you as a person and what you can see yourself doing happily for the rest of your life. Once you know your true passion in life you can use it as a stepping point to build a nursing business you will love.

I Have an Interest in ____, but Don’t Know How to Incorporate it Into a (profitable) Nursing Business

When I say nursing is versatile and just about any interest could turn into a potential business I mean it. Say you have a serious interest in basket weaving. You weave baskets in your spare time and have gotten pretty darn good at it-so good you would like to start your own business.

How do you do that?

You’ve got to think outside of the box. Sure, basket weaving may not be the most popular or enviable skill, but you can make it work for you if that’s what you’re into. What about making homemade gift baskets, stuffing them with things patients in the hospital would actually need, and selling them at local hospital gift shops?

Sound crazy? Not really.

Take a look at some other potentially “out of the box” careers that could be a nursing business:

  • Sick daycare
  • Medical photographer
  • Vacation nursing services
  • Healthcare facility design consultant
  • Spanish for healthcare providers instructor

Look at the titles of these careers…do you see how they could tie into nursing and business?

I hope you do.

Now that you have an idea of how to incorporate your interests, nursing, and business, next week we will focus on qualities that will set you apart from competition.
